Netbooks revisited

Netbooks have been popular for some time except for their cost. Netbook is nothing but the name given to describe class small laptops which are fundamentally used for wireless communication and for Internet access. Netbooks are usually characterized by small-size, light weight and minimum functionality (Internet access, core computing). Netbooks are compact not only because of their size but also due to their optimization for a particular function. Net books can be very useful when there is no need for laptops with high graphics interface. Since their introduction in the market, the cost of Netbooks has been a major concern and hence people prefer for laptops instead of netbooks. This trend seems to change recently with Acer cutting down the price of its Aspire model. Acer has reduced the price by as much as $50 which means Netbooks will again become popular among customers.

New mouse and keyboard from Dell!

News has leaked out that Dell is set to launch its new set of mouse and keyboard. According to the buzz created by Blue Track, the computer behemoth will release a couple of models in mouse and keyboard shortly. While the mouse features short throw keys, LEDs to denote sensitivity and laser technology, the keyboard is said to come with nice media support keys and compact design. If you are a Dell crazy guy, it is one of the things you’ll look for. Still, this is all old technology that we have known for quite sometime. has a ways to go before it can match, say, Microsoft’s peripheral acumen — or the considerable buzz being generated by Blue Track at the moment. That said, the computer giant looks to have a couple new ones in the pipeline, and that’s always a treat for the folks too poor or lazy to replace their pre-bundled keyboard and mouse. The keyboard’s short-throw keys will be a love it or hate it affair, but the media keys seem nice enough, while the mouse offers sensitivity-denoting LEDs and some laser tech underneath to match those smooth, predictable contours. No word on a ship date, but look for these to show up in your new Dell boxes before long.

CMG controlled Robotic arm

Did you know that to move a robotic arm in a microgravity environment will force to alter the orientation of a spacecraft because of the negative reaction forces? Oh that sounds a lot irritating. It looks as if there’s an end to this. Researchers at Cornell University have devised a novel robotic arm which reduces the amount of energy required to move the arm without compromising on the speed (In fact it promises increased speed). To achieve this, they’ve used a control-moment gyroscope (CMG) in place of a motor for controlling the arm’s joints. The fact that this has been tested on board NASA’s Vomit Comet indicates that it may soon enter spatial action.

Fastest ever RAM

Scientists have unveiled a faster and more energy efficient RAM than the existing one. The new version is about 10 times faster than the present MRAM(Magnetoresistive random access memory). The latest version is said to dominate the market in a few years. MRAMs are different from the conventional RAMs in the fact that MRAMs store the binary 1 or 0 by changing the north-south direction of a tiny magnetic field instead of using the level of charge in a capacitor. Present MRAM is programmed by pulses of about 10 nanoseconds duration. So we are ten times faster,” New Scientist magazine quoted Serrano-Guisan as saying. Usually when the field is flipped, it takes some time to settle into its new orientation, and the north-south axis draws a few circles in the air before settling into place. Theoretical work says that it needs to draw only one circle before finding its new position, making the process faster.

Integra's Blu-Ray Deck

Integra which released the DHS-8.8 HD DVD player shockingly has reconciled this year with the release of the rather simple DBS-6.9 Blu-ray deck. Although the blu-ray version is far away from being stylish, it is at least not as bad as the last year’s version. Talks are around that the model is targeted basically on conventional DVD player users more than the younger generation who are fond of nano-tech gadgets. The unit is expected to cost under $600, a bit too much for many. Still, Integra is expecting the Blu-ray deck to score well in the market.

How many times have we witnessed video alterations in our life? But look at the latest technology which can turn the entire concept of the picture. A project undertaken at the University of Washington uses some rather advanced algorithms to analyze video and photographs of the same scene, the software can meld the two into something slightly better or even dramatically different. It is actually a Photoshop for video as it brings video effects to your Photoshop chops. You can edit a still shot, meld that with the video and your edits can be integrated flawlessly into the scene, without the tedious manual work. Although the technique works only with static scenes, researches are on the go to correct it.
